With less than a decade left to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals, and the ongoing onslaught of the COVID-19 pandemic, people, communities, and governments are grappling with the socio-economic fallouts. However, amidst the global crisis, significant developments are taking place in India and Europe in areas of business responsibility, transparency and accountability. Over the last three years, the project From Global Goals to Local Impact (GGLI) has aimed to influence the actions of the Indian private sector on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This has been with particular emphasis on strengthening the leadership and abilities of Indian civil society to engage with and influence private sector response on SDGs 5, 8, 10, and 16.
Implemented by Oxfam, and funded by the European Union, the GGLI project recognizes UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights as a key vehicle to stop a ‘race to the bottom’ on human rights and promote responsible business conduct. The role of private sector in creating a sustainable and inclusive society is particularly important in recognizing the equal rights of women and girls (SDG 5), creating decent jobs that pay a living wages (SDG 8), reducing inequalities (SDG 10), and building peaceful and inclusive societies (SDG 16).
In a virtual session on 25 March 2021 titled, Advancing Engagement between India and Europe on Business Responsibility and Sustainable Development, learnings and successes from the last three years of the GGLI project will be shared. Opportunities in the emerging legal and policy frameworks on business operations across supply and value chains will also be discussed. The session will, in addition, highlight the challenges, opportunities, and the road ahead for ensuring human rights of all are respected and protected in a business environment and how these form the basis of achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.
